CHAPTER 9
TROUBLESHOOTING
It is all too easy to get caught up in the excitement of the planning and the results themselves. Part of great planning and strategic thinking is seeing issues before they happen. This means looking at your plan from an objective vantage point and figuring out what could go wrong. Here are some things to consider:
What if your boss doesnât like it or wants to tweak it? This is a genuine possibility, and you will need to be prepared for this situation. It is unlikely that your boss will shut it down entirely, but you probably will have to consider their thoughts in order to move forward. Put your ego aside and listen to what they have to say. These will be words of wisdom for you and a guide to pushing the plan through. Sometimes, your boss will know things going on in the company that you are not privy to, and their thoughts could be an invaluable perspective.
What if your customer doesnât like it? This is a problem for those plans that focus on the customer. You must ask yourself questions from the customerâs point of view. Customers hate changeâeven good change. This issue can be solved with great communication with your team. Your team must be educated, prepared, and inspired to assist customersâ resistance to change. Strong efforts in advance of the rollout will pay big dividends.
What if your business partners donât like it? Having an open and honest dialog with your partners is vital to getting to the root cause of the disagreement. Leverage this to help speed the process along. One potential pitfall is if you share these partners with your competitors. If your partners donât like it or even think itâs âdumb,â they very well might share the information with your competitor.
What to do about negative influencers on your team. We will get to this in a chapter ahead, but this is something that you will have to address, and quickly. With the right listening skills and approach when speaking to them, you can turn these negative influencers into positive ones. Most people are negative because they fear how change will affect them. You will have to head that off at the pass.
How to handle negative thoughts after your plan kicks off. Sometimes, people must be convinced, and they may be skeptical even after seeing something in action. If they donât like it, they will become negative and may work against you. You must be prepared for this. Patience and positivity will win this issue. It is essential to drop your ego and listen. This will almost always happen, so you have to see it coming.
How to handle your self-doubt. This is a big one. You will have so many issues flying at you, and sometimes itâs easier to give in to the bad things people say. Everyone will try to poke holes through it, and they will do so for many different reasons. You shouldnât let those things set into your mindset.
